SynopsisThis course includes the theoretical foundations of clinical practice and the nursing process in the simulated clinical environment. Undergraduate registered nursing students will develop an understanding of the process of applying knowledge and expertise to a simulated clinical situation to develop a solution. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia [NMBA] standards for practice for the registered nurse are used as a framework to guide students in relation to person-centred care, patient safety, cultural and contextual competence, and developing practice.
At a beginning level, student nurses will develop effective clinical reasoning skills that enable the collection of data, an ability to solve problems, make decisions, and provide quality patient care. Students will explore the application of the clinical reasoning process to fundamental patient assessments and care. Intensive clinical simulation and laboratory practice are used in this course to expand knowledge, skills, and confidence in principles of safe medication administration and various routes of medication administration and calculation.
The assessments in this course are competency- based. Students will achieve either an ungraded pass or an ungraded fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course.
Students who do not achieve 100% for an assessment item will not pass the course. Students are to contact the Enrolment Support Team usq.support@usq.edu.au for a revised study plan.
This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students and mandatory laboratories for on-campus students and an Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council mandated medication calculations quiz.
Students have unlimited attempts in the Med+Safe Quiz. 100% accuracy in medication assessment is required to pass the course.
If students have been unable to achieve 100% in the Medsafe assessment, students are to please contact the Enrolment Support Team unisq.support@unisq.edu.au usq.support@unisq.edu.au for a revised study plan.
As per the BNSG Program Rules, students are required to:
1. meet all mandatory course requirements including - mandatory residential school or clinical laboratory requirements where this is present in courses.
If you students miss a mandatory lab/residential school class, you students will need to arrange the make-up of these hours, by accessing the following form: Nursing change of residential school/lab request.
This form is located on the UniSQ Student Centre landing page. Go to the tile: Useful forms to locate this form and link for submission.
If you have received an incomplete grade, it is your responsibility to read the associated release note at grades release to obtain further instructions.
Please note:
1. Students who have not achieved 100% NUR1398 attendance will not be offered clinical placement for NUR1399 Foundations of Nursing Practice.
2. Students are eligible to go out on their scheduled NUR1399 Foundations of Nursing Practice placement as planned, as medication administration is not part of the aged care 80hr placement.
