A cornerstone of effective education is an understanding of how humans develop. In this course, you will develop your understanding of the typical developmental milestones (i.e., physical, social and intellectual) and characteristics of students and how these may affect learning. It is imperative that you have an understanding of the common developmental milestones and progression that influences learning across the lifespan. This understanding of typical development will then provide important implications for your teaching.
This course offers an introduction to the key concepts related to human development from birth to adulthood and how this is linked to teaching and learning. It provides an overview of the typical and atypical patterns of development pertaining to physical, cognitive and psychosocial dimensions of human development. The implications of developmental milestones will be explored from a view of the implications on teaching, beginning to prepare you for the profession. An awareness of the importance of teacher resilience will also be introduced in this course, through the use of the BRiTE programme. This course will develop your ability to discuss development as it relates to learning and skill in academic communication and critical reflection.
