Summary

SynopsisThis fundamental engineering course enables students to investigate engineering processes, represent them in models and predict their dynamic behaviours from a systems point of view. Through this course students study the essential skills for the analysis, modification and achievement of specific behaviour in dynamic systems, and how to control the performance of dynamic systems.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:
1.
Deduce a linear, lumped parameter, time variant model to describe the behaviour of engineering equipment which might include electrical, mechanical, thermal and hydraulic or pneumatic components;
2.
Predict the behaviour of a system from its linear model;
3.
Exploit the analogous behaviour of different types of physical components and systems which are described by similar models;
4.
Select and apply time domain, s-domain and/or frequency domain analysis and design techniques as appropriate;
5.
Use the classical methods for design of basic feedback control system.

Topics

1. Physical system modelling 2. Time domain analysis and design 3. S-domain analysis and design 4. Frequency domain analysis and design 5. Typical controllers and design

Assessments

Assessment due dates (as listed in Week Due) are indicative until finalised by the end of Week 1 for each Study Period (Offering). After Week 1, Assessment due dates may change with the approval of the Dean (Academic) or Delegate in limited circumstances. All Assessment due date changes approved after Week 1 will be communicated to students accordingly via Handbook and StudyDesk.
