<p>Policies are sets of principles, rules and statements of intent that guide decisions within organisations to assist them to achieve their mission and purpose. When formulating policies, organisations need to consider a range of internal and external factors.  Internal factors include risk appetite; governance models; CSR; ethics; organisational purpose; and values.  External factors include the local, national and global political and regulatory landscapes, socio-economic factors, and the competitive environment.  Shaping policy requires leaders who can draw on and leverage the collective intelligence of diverse groups who can offer perspective and expertise on those various influencing factors.  Operating in a way that considers both the internal and external factors requires the crafting and communicating of careful policy and the ability to galvanise the organisation to embrace the values and mission of the business. </p>
