This is the first of two courses which address the practice of professional engineering and professional built environment. The course is concerned largely with non-technical matters, independent of the specific disciplines, which involve the particular work undertaken, performance and responsibilities borne by the professional engineer and built environment practitioners. The major manifestation of this professional practice is the participation in professional development activities and the planning, execution and reporting of project work. Part of this course is directed at the preparation for the commencement of your final year research project.
The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the USQ accreditation agreement with the accrediting organisation/s (where relevant). ENG3902 nominated ePortfolio graduate (i.e., 3x specific nominated) capabilities and elements of competency demonstrated from the current learning pathway completed courses, and ENG3902 professional practice activities as defined in the online ePortfolio assessment scope PDF document located on the StudyDesk Assessment Tab.

Students must successfully complete this course before enrolling in ENG4903; students cannot enrol in ENG3902 and ENG4903 in the same semester. Students who will commence their final-year project (ENG4111, ENG8411, ENG8002, ENG8414) in Semester 1 should take this course in the preceding semester. Students who will commence their Masters project (ENG8411, ENG8002, ENG8414) in Semester 2 should take this course in the preceding year.

reflect on professional skills with a view to the final year project; identify needs for improvement, and plan activities to attain these skills;

show initiative to establish contact and communicate effectively with supervisory, technical and administrative staff as well as peers;

plan, prepare and deliver a verbal presentation in English, to a professional standard, making effective use of presentation aids; present, defend and debate technical information;

explain the importance and role of a professional conference; evaluate and critique conference presentations of peers and provide constructive feedback;

select and justify professional development activities, during residential school and external to USQ; interact with professionals; evaluate activities and reflect on the relevance to personal and professional development needs.
