SynopsisSuccessful psychoeducational, counselling and supervision groups are led by facilitators who have developed competencies in planning, listening, observing, and responding to group dynamics and process, and leading interventions. This course equips students with an understanding of the theoretical bases for group work and provides opportunity for students to learn about the process of different types of groups from beginning to end. In the first group of topics, the focus is on understanding the role of the group leader(s) and group process. Students will then co-create and co-facilitate learning content counselling in various settings and modes of delivery. Finally, ideas of ethics and legal issues in group work and different theories of group counselling will be explored.

This course contains a mandatory four-day residential school (30 hours) and 10 hours of mandatory online synchronous workshops, as per the program accreditation agreement between UniSQ and Counselling accreditation bodies. Non-compliance with this attendance requirement will result in the student not being able to pass the course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

Discuss and evaluate various group types, formats and stages

Critically discuss ethical and professional issues in group work and other modalities of counselling

Articulate understanding of the importance of cultural awareness in group facilitation;
4.
Critically review a group from both functional and process perspectives;
5.
Develop and demonstrate foundational skills as a group facilitator and reflect on level of preparedness to undertake this role;
6.
Reflect on and analyse a group process experience from a personal and conceptual perspective.

Introduction to Group Work: A Multicultural Perspective Leading Groups and the role of a Group Counsellor Group Process: Stages of Development Ethical and Legal Issues in Group Counselling Theories and Techniques of Group Counselling Other Counselling Modalities (e.g., Telehealth, Critical Incident, School Counselling etc)

Assessments

Assessment due dates (as listed in Week Due) are indicative until finalised by the end of Week 1 for each Study Period (Offering). After Week 1, Assessment due dates may change with the approval of the Dean (Academic) or Delegate in limited circumstances. All Assessment due date changes approved after Week 1 will be communicated to students accordingly via Handbook and StudyDesk.
